Cleaning Up a Shower Door Leak

If you step out of your shower and find a pool of water on your bathroom floor, it’s important to clean it up as quickly as possible.

That’s because water can cause damage to wood, plaster, fiberboard, and other materials that are inside the walls and beneath the floors of your home. If water damage is not addressed immediately, it eventually can cause structure failure, which can result in a ceiling collapse, holes in floors and even rot and mold to form.

Tile Is Not Enough

Some homeowners think that just because they have tile floors and that the places where their floor meet the wall are enclosed that they are immune from water damage. But this is not the case.

The puddles on the floor are only ones you can see, but there probably are others you can’t see. Pooling water is a warning sign that your shower doors haven’t been installed properly or are failing to work the way they should.

Get the Water Up ASAP

The first thing you should do is remove the water from the floor before it can cause further damage — even if it is a tile floor. Use a mop or even a towel to soak up the excess water and remove it to a bucket or into a drain.

Your next step should be to try to identify the cause of the water leak. Did something unusual happen, such as you forgot to close the shower door while showering? If not, check the seams of your shower doors and look for gaps.

Hold a flashlight behind the closed door. If light can penetrate the seal, so can water.

The next thing you should do is to contact your contractor or whoever installed your frameless shower doors to have them make the necessary repairs. In many instances, your shower doors may be covered under warranty.
